Tested Mechanical Joint Restraint for C909 and C900-16 PVC Pipe
With the 2016 release of the consolidated AWWA standard C900, EBAA developed a new restraint specifically for the higher Pressure Classes in that standard for nominal pipe sizes 12” and smaller. The same kind of Pressure Class changes occurred with AWWA C909 pipe.
It was impractical to try to change the existing restraint (Series 1500 and Series 1600) because of the years of continued and successful use and because we were not simply going to change our literature without the testing to our rigorous testing and performance requirements. As a result, a new restraint was developed to work with both C900 and C909 pipe at the higher pressures. This new product was the Series 1900 serrated restraint.
One of the derivative products was a restraint for use with the most versatile joint in the waterworks industry – the mechanical joint. We use one of the restraint rings from the Series 1900 harness in conjunction with some extra-long bolts and a standard MJ gland to obtain higher pressure ratings with a serrated device. The use of serrations was important for the smaller diameters of C909 pipe. Wedges are very effective at developing reliable restraint for standard PVC pipe but with the very thin walls of the C909 pipe there can be concern about the deflection of the pipe wall. This product is the Series 19MJ00.
The result is a simple to install, reliable, fully tested restraint for your C900 and C909 pipe.
